What is an Oral Health Assessment

At Home Dental is offering free oral health assessments to care home residents – but what is the difference between this and a full dental examination?

Oral Health Assessments

An Oral Health Care Assessment (OHCA) is an evaluation of oral health carried out by a qualified dental professional. It’s a visual examination of teeth, gums, tongue and soft tissues, including a review of medical and dental history. Specific treatments required such as professional cleans or fillings will be identified, and areas of concern such as dental infection or oral thrush will be picked up on. A full cancer screening of the oral tissues will also be carried out.

  • Visual examination of teeth, gums and soft tissues
  • Identify areas of concern / treatment required
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Review of medical history

Full Dental Examinations

A full dental examination is sometimes recommended following an Oral Health Care Assessment (OHCA). This may be because areas of concern have been identified or treatments have been recommended. The dentist feels that it would benefit the patient to have a more full investigation of the person’s oral wellbeing than the more simplistic overview of an OHCA. In addition to each of the points covered in an OHCA, a full dental assessment may also include:

  • Full charting of the mouth
  • X-rays as required
  • Full diagnostics and compilation of individual treatment plan

FAQs

What happens after an Oral Health Assessment?

Following the OHCA, we will send the patient (or relative) and care home (if applicable) an Oral Health Care Plan for the individual. This will detail the findings of the assessment, oral health advice moving forwards and any recommended treatments. Costs of recommended treatments will be provided, with no obligation. Should you choose to undertake further treatment, we will come back to carry this out, ideally within two weeks.

How much does it cost?

For care home residents we carry out the Oral Health Care Assessment free of charge and also compile the individual’s Oral Health Care Plan following the assessment at no cost. Ongoing treatment recommendations are individually priced and come with no obligation.

Why have one?

OHCAs help individuals, their relatives and carers (if applicable) to understand the person’s oral needs going forward. Good oral health improves general well-being and helps prevent problems such as toothache, decay (cavities), and tooth loss, as well as identifying more serious concerns as soon as possible. A healthy mouth makes it easier for the person to eat well and enjoy food, but more than this it impacts their self esteem, personal wellbeing and overall health. Studies show us by looking after our mouths, we can help to prevent cardiovascular disease, early stroke and diabetes.  This is all from eliminating the plaque – bacteria that forms in all our mouths daily.
